Thanks very much for this comment. Agree that in the end so much of this is about the composition and leadership of the group. Yes as you say, a roll of the dice.

Michael, this is interesting. I've long been ambivalent about workshopping, as I've had both positive and negative experiences. Ultimately, I arrived at the conclusion that the success of a workshop hinges on the people who participate. What's their motivation? To improve, sure, but what else? Are they insecure, and do they use that insecurity to bring others down and prop themselves up? Are they curious? Do they want to lord their knowledge and skill over others? Do they listen? Do they want to help, or do they want to be perceived as helpful? I know I'm veering into the realm of pop psych, but in my experience these deep-seated impulses play a central role in the quality of the feedback. The trouble is it's impossible to know what the psychological composition of a group is in advance. As such, it's a roll of the dice.
